Kurk Custom Homes: Design & Build Blog: I now pronounce you....HomeOwner!

In the midst of the +Kurk Homes routine, I am also planning a wedding. Eeeek! Robert and I are tying the knot in the middle of May - hopefully in decent Texas weather - and earlier in March, the wheels were in full rotation to get everything set the way (I thought) we wanted it. Then, we came back later to modify it once we had everything in line of prices and expectations. We had no idea what things would cost and where to budget what.

It was extremely helpful for me to entrust the services to a wedding planner - so I interviewed a few and came to the final decision with Robert. I went with one that was reasonably priced and could offer me what I needed, knowing full well that there were several things I needed to provide myself since that was not included per our contract.

So, of course, that made me think about the typical homeowner.

Having never done this before, wedding-wise, I thought about how many of our homeowners had not designed and/or built a home before. My prioritized list related to real estate because that is how my brain works, and anyone who knows wedding planning knows it can be stressful if you freak out about every little detail. As long as it gets right by the big day, it's okay if there are hiccups. That's part of the process - unless you're ready to shelf out a whole lot of dollars to get the deluxe, top of the line, million dollar wedding/house. Ha! Not this kid! At one point in college (and possibly after), I had little saucers full of the complementary salt and pepper packets from fast food joints in an effort to save every dime. My veggie drawer in the fridge was also stuffed with ketchup and mustard packets. A penny saved is a penny earned!

But, saving a dollar here and there means you're going to have to deal with reality. No, you cannot get diamond encrusted light fixtures and expect to be in a reasonable lighting allowance. One of our appliance/lighting vendors at one point had a Swaroski™chandelier priced over $50,000 in their showroom. That's just harsh. Keeping a budget in mind is normal. Having to accept that you can't put everything you've ever dreamed of in your home is a harsh realization for some - the sooner you can educated yourself on your budget what is a typical cost, the easier the process is. Both in house building and wedding planning!

And, as life continues, and you see things in perspective, Big Picture. You realize stressing out about every detail is exhausting and just not worth it. You get a lot further being nice to other human beings than being demanding and snarky. Catch more flies with honey? Or is it bears?

Stress happens. Change happens. Life keeps going.
